Why we need Health & Safety in the workplace

A healthy and safe atmosphere exerts positivity and relaxation irrespective of the fact whether it’s your workplace or your home. However, employers need to take special care for the health, safety, and well-being of their employees. Not only does it increase the productivity of their employees but it is an obligation that they must follow and non-adherence to it can get them in trouble legally.
Apart from legal restrictions, providing a healthy and safe environment to the employees should be the top-most priority of the employer owing to the following reasons.

There are many benefits that an employer can derive by giving their employees a safe and healthy environment. Some of these benefits include positive work environment, lower staff turnover, enhanced productivity etc.

The main benefit of keeping the office atmosphere safe comes in the form of enhanced productivity of employees. This brings with it workplace positivity and offers employees a relaxed environment in the knowledge that they are not at risk. An office that is fully equipped with safety measures and employees that understand their responsibility (and yours as employer) will help them focus on their own abilities resulting in increased productivity.

Any accident in the office premises can cost the employer a lot financially and if in an unfortunate case of the accident an employee gets injured, the severity of the problem increases dramatically. The financial loss will depend on the accident, but the cost of injury to the employee will have to be borne by the employer. A safe and secure environment will reduce the insurance cost a great deal.

A workplace with no proper health and safety maintenance will definitely see a lot of employees quitting the work for better prospects. No person likes to work in an environment where they are not provided with proper safety gear or equipment. The employer ultimately is responsible for this. If there is heavy machinery installed in the workplace, it is the duty of the employer to check all the security concerns associated with it, ensuring it is well maintained. It is also their responsibility to communicate the safety precautions to the employees for their well-being as well as making them understand the implications of ignoring any safety guidelines.

The employer needs to address all the risks and concerns associated with the office premises, the business, subcontractors and employees. It is useful in most cases to assign an individual to oversee all health and safety aspects within the business.  Training can then be brought in-house not only for the employees but also the designated Health and Safety person.

Not offering a safe, secure, and healthy environment to the employees will have the employer’s reputation at stake. Accidents can ruin reputations as well as lives. The following courses offered by Online Care Courses online will discuss the reasons and importance of why employee’s safety and health should be the first priority for any employer.

Babbel - The ultimate language learning site

I've recently looked at Babbel, as I am keen interest to learn a new language.  Spanish I think will be my weapon of choice and based on the trial I've just completed I have to say I'm quite impressed by their site and App at They offer a wide range of languages and have a fair pricing system. I'm just waiting until I move house before I take the ultimate plunge but for the time being I recommend signing up for a free trail as they then offer discounted deals such as "12 months for the price of 6" if you don't commit right away.

Will let you know how it goes when I get around to paying for one of their courses.

Online Care Courses

I have started writing FAQ's for Online Care Courses. The company are based online and offer over 100 courses specifically for the Care sector.  All of their courses are available as self paced study options and include topics ranging from Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, understanding the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, person centred care to dealing with challenging behaviour in care homes.

Each page has a number of FAQ's that I am continually updating and will hopefully answer questions that those thinking of starting a career as care workers have.

I'll also post updates on here.

ACAS - the UK's Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service provides impartial free advice to employers and employees regarding employment law.  Continuing on the theme of mental health awareness I stumbled upon their Mental Health guides and found a wealth of information regarding the growing need to invest in the mental health of employees. They also list a couple of mental health blogs and are the creators of this five minute video on the subject -

For more information go to ACAS and search for Mental Health.

Employee Mental Health Training

A recent survey in the national UK press has shown that poor mental health is now the number one reason for staff absense.  Mental health training is now seen as a viable way of increasing productivity in the work force.  Mental health and wellbeing is as important for employers as employees, with an estimated 1 in 5 of their workforce now affected by a mental health problem.
